James River Regional Cleanup - Cleaning Up the Source
Sponsored by the James River Advisory Council

For the 13th consecutive year, the James River Regional Cleanup will be held in multiple localities along more than 70 miles of the James.
Each year, hundreds of volunteers on foot and on boats, converge at selected sites throughout the greater-Richmond area to pick up litter. The volunteers collect hundreds of bags of trash, including recyclable materials and larger debris such as tires and discarded appliances.
Last year's event produced over 500 bags of trash and almost 300 bags of recycling with over 1,000 volunteers. In addition to trash discarded directly in the James, heavy rains carry trash downhill along thousands of miles of roadside ditches and streams, and eventually to the James River, demonstrating how a watershed works. The event’s theme, “Cleaning up the source,” is designed to trigger thoughts about the origins of the trash that is collected. Many groups of volunteers target specific areas along streams that flow into the James.
In addition to volunteers on foot, paddlers and power-boaters, alike, are encouraged to participate because boaters can reach trash that’s out of grasp of the shore-bound volunteers.
